Pre33Coin is primarily focused on offering gold coins minted before 1933
$10 Gold Eagles and $20 Gold Double Eagles
Here at Pre33Coin, we may not be Professional Numismatists but we are coin enthusiasts. Gold coins minted before 1933 are not only pieces of art that we can admire but they also provide a window into America's historical past. Owning a coin of a particular date inspires one to think about historical events from that particular time period
In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt issued executive order 6102 making it illegal to own gold coins with exception to coins that had numismatic value at the time. The Gold Reserve Act was subsequently passed in 1934 outlawing most private possession of gold. It wasn't until 1974 that this act was repealed. A sizable portion of the Pre 33 gold coins were melted down and stored away as bullion by the Gov't.
Prices for Pre 1933 gold coins can range from prohibitively expensive all the way down to the gold spot price .
The coins with a smaller mintage in the best graded condition, the best of the best, tend to be extremely pricey. These coins elude most collectors.
The least expensive coins are those with a high mintage and a large number of surviving examples in mint state condition. This category is usually available for a relatively small premium over the gold spot price.
Coins with relative rarity, a low mintage in a decent condition or a more common coin in very good condition are affordable for most collectors.
When purchasing coins, it is advantageous to buy graded coins certified by a reputable 3rd party. PCGS and NGC are the two leaders in this category. Coins displaying a CAC sticker are considered the best for the grade.
Certified coins give you a more accurate representation of the coin's condition than you might otherwise get when buying coins with no certification.
The authenticity of any coin that is for sale is a major concern for anyone looking to purchase a coin. We also have these concerns. This is why all the coins we have acquired throughout the years have been purchased from reputable auction houses and brokers. For more information, refer to the "our coin vendors" page.
